Closet Makeover #1: Organizing My Messy Closet

I have to admit something…
I’m a big, hot mess.
Seriously.
As much as I would like to believe that I’m an organized
and efficient person, the truth is I am not.
I’m messy. I’m scatter-brained. I’m fluttering off to another project before I can clean up the last one.
This causes chaos in my life.
I want things to be pretty and organized but I like making things pretty, which is a messy business.
So I live in a constant state of destroying one part of my house to make another part pretty.
My closets are the most neglected (and abused) areas of my home so I’ve decided that I’m going to focus my Mockingbird Monday projects for the month of March on closets.
My goal is to give four closets in my home inspired makeovers.
The catch…
I can’t spend more than $100 on each closet.

This is the closet I share with my husband.
I’ve been dreaming that it would look like this:

But my wallet looks like this:
So I sat down and decided what I really needed in terms of storage and organization.
I decided that I needed:
1. Storage for shoes…a lot of storage for shoes
2. A place to store and organize jewelry
3. A place for purses
4. A place for my husband’s ties and belts
5. A pretty, clean feel
Shoes
To solve my dress shoe storage dilemma, I bought 10 plastic shoe containers from the Dollar Tree to stack on top of my wire shelf. Each shoe box has a photograph of the pair of shoes that are stored within the box. I spray painted the lids to match the rest of the room.

I stacked a shoe cubby that I had on top of an old bookshelf that has followed us from college. The shelf was one of those cheap Walmart buys but I spray painted it blue and added
bird-themed paper to the back for a little color.
Ikea boxes store socks and hose.

Jewelry
This jewelry chest was a hand-me-down from my mom.
It had a lot of great storage but it needed a little love…
A little paint and new fabric went a long way…

Purses
A $2 pack of hooks from Walmart keep my purses organized
 Men’s Accessories
This canvas shoe organizer was in the Goodwill pile but I saved it to organize my husband’s accessories.

To the right, a fabric-covered cork board gives us a place to store
the extra buttons that come with shirts and sweaters.

 Decor
I bought these wall decals on clearance at Target for just $6!
The “his” and “hers” signs were things I had on hand and spray painted.
And I was able to use the tubes the art came in to keep my boots from slouching,
making it easier to store them…

This dish was a Christmas present. I decided it would work well as an organizer for perfume.
This picture frame was one I had. I just spray painted and distressed it a bit.

Total Cost of Makeover:
$36.75
