42 Daughters: Reflections on Faith and Life

Do you ever hear God’s voice clearly?
Or have a moment that stops you in your tracks because it is so evident
that God is right there, listening?
I had a moment like that a few weeks ago as I was driving to work.
The 30 minute commute to my office in Frankfort is often the most peaceful part of my day.
I get the privilege of driving past some of the most beautiful farms in Lexington and as the season is turning
towards summer, I find myself driving slower to take it all in.
My drive is also a time of prayer. I get a half an hour to tell God everything that is on my mind.
Sometimes all I can think of is knock-knock jokes
(talk about a child-like faith)
and other times, I have deep conversations with Him about everything going on in my life.
A few weeks ago, I was praying about the fertility problems we’ve been facing.
Through my tears, I kept telling God all of the wonderful things I’d do if I were a mother.
I told Him how much love I have in me and how I need someone to share it with.
And as clear as if it came over the radio, I felt like God was saying to me,
“Amanda, I’ve given you 42 girls who need your love. You have 42 daughters right now. Love on them.”
Up until that point, the work I’ve been doing for Hope Hill has come from a separate part of my heart but I can’t help but feel like maybe those girls are my girls for now.
42 daughters.
Will I ever learn to be grateful for what I have instead of worrying about what I don’t have?
When I was in middle school, I came home to find that my mom had redecorated my room. Posters of all of my favorite bands and movie stars were hanging on the wall, there was new bedding that was much more grown-up than the old quilt I had and best of all, she had folded all of my clothes and organized everything.
I’ve never told her how thankful I was for that little makeover but looking back on it, I will never forget how grown up I felt. I’ll never forget how loved I felt.
In some small way, I hope this room at Hope Hill makes those girls feel the way I did when my mama made my room my own little piece of the world.
So, do you want a sneak peak?
The chandelier Brecher’s Lighting donated…
Pretty baskets…
A sweet little tree for jewelry…
Scout liked the matching hooks…
Flowers for an arrangement…
3 wire baskets (just $2 at Hobby Lobby) and some art prints…
 And a lovely new rug
(as you can see, Scout approved.)
And I’m PRAYING that I hear back from the department
in charge of donations at Urban Outfitters because this shower curtain would be PERFECT
for the dressing room we’re making! Cross your fingers that they call me tomorrow 🙂
