Thrifty Thursday: Wreath Makeover

on September 13, 2012 in Crafts, DIY, Good Buys, Home and Garden, Thrifty-Thursday

Someday I’m going to write a post about all of the things I refuse to pay whole-price for like lamps, candlesticks and grapevine wreaths. How do I get around paying upwards of $7 for a grapevine wreath you ask? I only buy them at Goodwill. Sure, when I find them they are usually covered in cheap, dusty vines or tacky bows but those things are easy to remove and with a little love, what once looked like a hot-Christmas mess looks like, oh, let’s say this:

I didn’t manage to get a before photo of the wreath, which I snagged at Goodwill for 50 cents, but honestly, it was so ugly I had to stick it in the trunk to keep from pulling vines off while I drove. If you buy a thrifted grapevine wreath, I recommend spraying it with Lysol when you get home just in case birds have ever built a nest in it, which has actually happened to me before.

I wanted the wreath to have a rustic, equestrian-vibe since we’re in the heart of horse country so I searched the belt rack at Goodwill to add some leather and got this leather belt for $1. Ready to make your own?

You will need:

-Grapevine wreath
-Old leather belt
-Painted wood letter
-Fabric of your choice cut into 10-12 inch long strips (about 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide)
-Scrapbooking pearl accessories
-Glue gun and glue sticks

1. Fold the strip of fabric at the bottom so both sides meet then glue it together.

2. Twist the fabric so that  it spirals and hold it tightly so that it doesn’t unravel.

3. Begin coiling the twisted fabric like a disc, gluing as you go so that it holds together. The glued end from step 1 will be the center of your flower.

4. To create the belt “hanger,” cut the belt to the desired length and save the scraps. I used a belt with loops and snaps, which both held the wreath up and allowed me to hang it from a heavy-duty plastic hook. You can disguise the place you’ve cut and joined the belt together with a little strip of burlap. I joined the two pieces together with my high-temp glue gun but you could also sew them together if you feel so inclined.

5. Arrange and glue your flowers to your wreath. You may want to wire the letter to the wreath or if you have a high-temp glue gun, that will hold the letter in place.

6. Using the scraps from the leather belt, cut out leaves to tuck underneath the flowers. Embellish with pearl scrapbooking acessories.

And there you have it! I a lovely multi-season wreath that costs little more than a few dollars!
