God-Winks

Mimi Moore is one of my favorite people in the world and I met her on accident. It wasn’t long after I started working as an editorial assistant, in fact I think it was my first real assignment that had taken me on the road to travel from the legendary Shaker Village in Harrodsburg to Kentucky’s second Shaker Village at South Union. I’ve always been a road-romantic, which is the reason I stopped in Greensburg as the sun was setting. It is an idyllic, little town with the kind of buildings nestled around the town square that no bothers to build these days. You know the kind: richly detailed, strong, built to last.
I pulled into a spot in front of the Plaid Peacock, a sweet little shop with a window display that rivaled anything you’d see in New York. There was a “closed” sign hanging on the door so I cupped my hands and tried to peek through the display so I could see what treasures were waiting inside. I jumped, embarrassed to have been caught, when I heard someone jerk open the door. A woman with short brown hair, a denim button-up top and quirky little glasses was standing there with her hands on her hips. “Honey,” she said, “Are you just itchin’ to shop or what?!”
From the moment I laid eyes on her in front of that little shop, I knew Mimi Moore was one of my soul mates, despite the fact that we’re in very different places in our lives. She is a breast cancer survivor, a widow and grandmother of a small troop of beautiful, dark-haired grandbabies. She is on every committee you can imagine and champions all sorts of causes. When she wakes up, she hollers, “This is the day the Lord has made!” What common ground could we find? Just like red wine dances with the flavor of a juicy steak, our personalities compliment each other in a beautiful way. She is one of those rare people you meet who makes you better. She says when you meet people like that, people who bring out all of your best qualities, it’s a God-wink. “It’s His way of reminding you that He knows you better than anyone else,” she says. “He knows who will bring out your best.”
I like that. God-winks. Doesn’t that just make you smile?
Yesterday I had a God-wink. I had to go up to the hospital to have a HIDA-scan to determine if my gallbladder is functioning (which it is not. ) I spent the whole afternoon with a woman named Pam who wrapped me up in a warm blanket like a corn dog, tenderly placed my IV, and spent hours talking with me about everything from fishing to God while I had to stare straight up at the ceiling without moving an inch. Have you ever heard that saying that you might be the only little bit of Jesus someone sees in a day? Well, I’m glad Pam works in a place where she sees people all day long because she just radiates and you know, I don’t think she even realizes that. She told me she grew up on a farm in Grant County and with this smooth-as-molasses accent said, “I am not the most religious person but I do love God and I think too many people go looking for Him like He’s not everywhere around us.”
Sometimes it’s lonely being at home, even though there’s no place I’d rather be. People sometimes ask me if I miss working on the Kentucky A to Z series and the truth is, I don’t miss anything but the people. I miss sitting at kitchen tables with people I’ve never met who feel like instant-relatives. I miss front-porch talking with new friends. But then I think God must know that about me because He’s so good to send me these little winks that remind me that I don’t have to go looking for anything. He leads me to where I need to be every time, just in case I might forget He’s all around me. He knows just who to send to bring out my best when I’m flat on my back, with no where to look but up.
Have you ever had a God-wink? Who brings out your best qualities?
